NANO2ALL partner organisations and involved science centres participated in a training session in Amsterdam, NL on 13 and 14 September to discuss and try out the methodology designed for the multi-stakeholder dialogues. Multi-stakeholder dialogue events will take place this autumn in Sweden France, Spain, Italy, Poland and Israel. In the dialogue events, participants will discuss how societal values, needs and concerns can be better reflected through an increased uptake of societal engagement in research and innovation (R&I) in the area of nanomedicine, nanotextiles and nanotechnology applied to brain-computer interface in the different countries. Stay tuned! More will be soon published on these events on this page. -
UNESCO calls for responsible research, including more dialogue with society

On 17 May 2017, UNESCO published a report on the Revision of the Recommendation on the Status of Scientific Researchers (1974): http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0024/002489/248910e.pdf. The recommendation calls upon UNESCO Member States to facilitate scientific research and calls upon researchers and employers of research to engage in responsible research. The update was needed to accommodate the present-day context where scientists are active, in private as well as public organisations. The updated recommendation is the fruit of a process of international consultations with Member States representatives, experts and stakeholders, held since 2015. It is scheduled to be submitted for adoption at the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference, 30 October – 14 November 2017. Comparing regulatory and industrial priorities in governance of nanomaterials

The Journal Environment, Systems and Decisions just published “Comparing mental models of prospective users of the Sustainable Nanotechnology Decision Support System”, by Ineke Malsch (partner in NANO2ALL) and colleagues of the project Sustainable Nanotechnologies (www.sun-fp7.eu). Mental modelling analysis can be a valuable tool in understanding and bridging cognitive values in multi-stakeholders’ communities. It is especially true in situation of emerging risks where significant uncertainty and competing objectives could result in significant difference in stakeholder perspective on the use of new materials and technologies. This paper presents a mental modelling study performed among prospective users of an innovative decision support system for safe and sustainable development of nano-enabled products (SUNDS). These users included representatives of industry and regulators, as well as several insurance specialists and researchers. Methodology and tools for comparing stakeholder views and objectives in the context of developing a decision support system are presented. Nanotechnology is very much present in our daily life. Nanomaterials are all over from cosmetics to food, clothes, pharmaceutical drugs and much more. A new platform, the European Union Observatory for Nanomaterials, collects now interesting information on the uses of nanomaterials, their effect on human health and environment, and recent nanotechnology innovation and research. The Platform is available at https://euon.echa.europa.eu/The NANO2ALL citizen page, created especially for non-professionals, will also help you find reading on this: www.nano2all.eu/stakeholders/citizens

The prototype version of the NANO2ALL scenario exploration game (adapted from JRC´s future simulation tool ‘Scenario Exploration System’ (SES)) was presented in the Gamelab of Ecsite Annual Conference 2017 (www.ecsite.eu). The game, which will be used as part of the multi-stakeholder dialogues, explores future nanotechnology scenario situations in the targeted application areas across multiple timelines. More importantly, the game allows participants to take different social roles associated with nanotechnologies, helping to imagine themselves in someone else´s shoes and comprehend the social dynamics developed due to stakeholders’ interaction. Learn more about the game in our Newsletter #2 to be accessed under “resources” of this website.

- Category: Event, News
The NANO2ALL citizen dialogue methodology was demonstrated at Ecsite Annual Conference 2017 (www.ecsite.eu) at the session “Unleashing citizen contributions to “science for all””. This session provided the opportunity to science communicators and others to experiment writing narratives on future situations related to the nano enabled objects, that were previously created by citizens in the NANO2ALL citizen dialogues. This helped reflect on values, concerns and needs around these objects. More on the dialogue methodology and the preliminary results of the citizen dialogues can be found under “resources” in this website. -

Ineke Malsch (MALSCH), a partner in NANO2ALL project, was interviewed about “Citizens’ Responsibility for Nanotechnology” during the Internet TV programme NanoAlerta: www.nanotecnologiadoavesso.org. The interview highlighted what citizens can contribute to a collective responsibility for governing nanotechnology in society. Citizens can play four roles in responsible innovation: learn about new technologies; participate in citizen science projects (e.g. Nano2All www.nano2all.eu); express an opinion in public dialogue; and consume responsibly.
