On 17 May 2017, UNESCO published a report on the Revision of the Recommendation on the Status of Scientific Researchers (1974): http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0024/002489/248910e.pdf. The recommendation calls upon UNESCO Member States to facilitate scientific research and calls upon researchers and employers of research to engage in responsible research. The update was needed to accommodate the present-day context where scientists are active, in private as well as public organisations. The updated recommendation is the fruit of a process of international consultations with Member States representatives, experts and stakeholders, held since 2015. It is scheduled to be submitted for adoption at the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference, 30 October – 14 November 2017.
