Define Responsibility at the start of the NANO2ALL dialogues

No CommentsWhat is responsibility in relation to nanotechnology in your experience? Six participants in an interactive workshop organised by NANO2ALL @ The S.NET discussed practical answers to this question. While most attendants mentioned examples from earlier projects on responsible nanotechnology research, two were not familiar with the concept. We will therefore need to explain what we mean by “Responsible Research and Innovation” before engaging citizens and stakeholders in the dialogue on nanotechnology organised in NANO2ALL, www.nano2all.eu.

Doomsday or Law and Order?

The Society for the Study of New and Emerging Technologies (S.NET) reflected on innovative ways to govern nanotechnologies and other emerging technologies responsibly with a wide variety of stakeholders, at their annual conference in Bergen, Norway on 12-14 October 2016. The opening key-note lecturer Silvio Funtowicz gave a doomsday vision, implying that history is full of revolutions moving from one world order to another. As we can’t plan the future, we will simply have to contribute our share to the transition and hope for the best.
The second key-note lecturer Joseph Dumit painted an even bleaker picture in which profit-hungry large corporations engaged in large scale ‘terraforming’ of the healthcare and oil fracking sectors, without any ethical consideration. Civil Society actors needed counselling to keep up the good spirit and achieve modest local successes.
At the end of the day, Sheila Jasanoff entered the scene to restore Law and Order at the Technological Frontier, inspiring hope in the younger generations of social scientists and humanities scholars interested in emerging technologies.

The second consortium meeting for Nano2All was successfully held in the beautiful Thessaloniki, Greece between May 10-11! We excitedly exchanged ideas and information on progress and development according to the Work Plan, including how to better reach out to our stakeholder groups, how to improve our project platform and social media platforms (Work Package 1), how to design pre-training questions to understand needs of different types of stakeholders, in order to maximise the results of the training (Work Package 2), what is the scenario game / how to play it, how to organise the Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue (MSD) at national and European level (Work Package 3), and how all these tasks will feed into the roadmap that will be developed towards the end of the project (WP4).
Our next project meeting, back-to-back with training to science centres to prepare them for training to citizens, will be held in December in Amsterdam! See you all there!
